Designing accessible coastal trails for older adults across the Irish southeast
Siobhán O'Connor has spent 14 years perfecting the art of accessible trail design. Her expertise spans over 40 coastal and heritage walking routes throughout Ireland, with deep specialisation in the Waterford coastline. She's the person older adults trust when they want to explore Ireland's most stunning cliffs safely.
The Journey
Her path into this work wasn't straightforward. Siobhán studied Environmental Science at University College Cork, graduating in 2009 with a focus on landscape management. But it wasn't until volunteering with the Irish Ramblers Association that she realised where her real passion lay — helping people connect with nature.
After five years with Waterford County Council's Parks and Recreation department, she noticed something that frustrated her. Brilliant heritage trails existed everywhere, but they weren't built with older adults in mind. Rest points were too far apart. Gradients weren't documented. Nobody explained what you'd actually encounter on the walk.
That observation led her back to study. She completed postgraduate training in Gerontology and Active Aging at Trinity College Dublin — a qualification that changed everything. Now she didn't just see terrain. She saw it through the eyes of someone managing arthritis, or catching their breath, or wanting to move slowly enough to enjoy the views.
Since joining geicofoundationrepair Ltd in 2017, Siobhán's become the authority on southeast coastal trails. She's personally surveyed every major walking route from Cork to Wexford. She knows the Ardmore Monastery headland like most people know their garden — the safe footing near the cliffs, the viewpoints worth the extra effort, where the wind picks up, which sections have shade.
What She Does
Areas of Expertise
Coastal Trail Assessment
Detailed terrain analysis covering gradient, surface conditions, exposure, and safety features. Every trail gets the full picture — not just the distance, but what your body actually experiences.
Aging & Accessibility Design
Understanding how age affects movement, stamina, and confidence on outdoor trails. She designs routes that challenge without overwhelming, and always has a thoughtful reason for every recommendation.
Heritage Trail Documentation
Weaving cultural history into practical walking guides. The Ardmore Monastery walk isn't just about the view — it's about understanding the monks who built there, the stories embedded in those stones.
Group Walking Strategy
Knows how to structure walks for mixed-ability groups. Whether it's friends with different fitness levels or families with grandparents, she's designed routes that work for everyone.
Navigation & Wayfinding
Clear signage, intuitive route design, and confidence-building landmarks. A good walk shouldn't require constant map-checking — it should feel obvious where to go next.
Environmental Management
Protecting coastal habitats while enabling access. Sustainable trail design that serves both walkers and the landscape itself — these aren't competing goals, they're the same goal.

"A good trail isn't about conquering terrain. It's about moving through a landscape with confidence and time to notice what makes it special. When I design a walk, I'm thinking about someone's breath, their knees, their need to pause and just look at the view. The technical details matter — gradients, surface, exposure — but only because they enable that experience of freedom."
Signature Work
The Ardmore Monastery Headland Walk
This isn't just any coastal trail. The Ardmore Monastery walk represents everything Siobhán's learned about accessible trail design. It combines challenging terrain with profound cultural history, managing both with careful attention to older walkers' needs.
The route takes you along 200-foot cliffs with views across Dungarvan Bay, then inland through the monastic settlement where Saint Declan established his church in the 5th century. It's genuinely beautiful, genuinely historic, and genuinely achievable for most older adults when approached with the right preparation.
What makes Siobhán's version different? She's identified exactly where you can rest safely. She knows which sections demand good footing and warns you ahead of time. She's explained the gradient in honest terms, not marketing-speak. And she's woven the monastery's actual history through the walk, so you're not just looking at old stones — you're understanding why they're there.
It's the kind of work that takes someone who knows both the landscape and the people who'll walk it. That's exactly what Siobhán brings to every trail she documents.
